Cycling Report

The holiday season has passed and the local Rock N Road cycling group have got back into there schedule of rides over both local tracks and roads.

Darrel and Jose have updated their Bikes and are aiming towards the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and there are many of the club members entering the round Ruapehu Ride in early February so there have been strong turnouts for the recent road rides including around Rotoaire which is a lovely and testing ride . Also We have Roger Bates training for the upcoming Wellington to Auckland race in February as well.

The club has also had several off road rides including the Pylon Track and Kiko Road with something for everyone if riding a bike is our thing. We hear of a cycling club forming in Taumaranui and look forward to meeting up and riding with them this year.

January is the start of the clubs financial year so reminding members that their annual subs ($20 senior $25 Family) are due now. Contact John at Plateau Cycles for more information.

The Club also meets monthly at the Sports Foundation headquaters to plan future happenings and the direction the club is going and any new projects we have. A recent example is the new emblazoned Shorts that have been a real hit with the riders. Thanks Particularly to Christina who ran the project. Combined with the previous vest the club stands out in the crowd.

TTST - Letter Wally (montly report)

Kia Ora Tatou

Hello everyone, well I have the bad habit of putting my hand up and I have volunteered to be part of the Turangi Tongariro Sports Foundation and we had our first meeting of the new season on Tuesday and it was a nice experience for me. Welcome to the new Chairman Anthony Hemopo and the able secretary Lesley “the legend” Hardisty

As the new boy I am listening and contributing where I can but I am in awe of those around me and the work they have done locally. With a hard core involved I am sure it will be a good year ahead.

There was considerable discussion of coming events such as the Turangi Triathlon and the training events “Splash and Dash” leading up to it with dates to be finalized but the splash and dash evenings will lead up 5 weeks before the Triathlon which is aimed specifically at the younger audience.

A report was given on the progress of the Combined sports centre proposed for Turangi Park and there is assistance being sought from SPARC and also council officers assisting in the Planning process. Kerrian Duff spoke confidently that there would be a good result. It was a step by step process but there is plenty of support from local and national organizations. There was mention to that there was a big weekend for Turangi coming in Easter 2013 for the Polo Crosse world Quadrangular Tournament , All hands on deck as they would say on a ship for this event. The time will pass quickly and this will the best occasion for Turangi to shine perhaps in its history.

Much discussion was had on how to get clubs to engage with the Sports foundation and the end result was to say to clubs it is here for you, providing opportunities to learn, to share ideas and learn from each others experiences and to help you grow or even survive. No club is too big or too small to be involved.

Finally the matter of maintaining the Current Club rooms, Dr Liaws old surgery, was brought up, so the Turangi yacht Club will mow the lawns before Xmas, that damned hand…. Other clubs will take their turn to give the lawns a once over. Probably have a once a year mow Graham reckons.

Thanks to the Sports Foundation for their efforts and Merry Xmas to all.

Cycling Report

The locals rides have been down in numbers at rock n road the last few weeks for a good reason.

First we had several riders doing the great lake challenge in the severe wind I am told Gena did a superb job for the first 80 k leg into a serious head wind the many gave up on. sallyanne did the next leg getting a tail wind from Turangi back to the finish, well done all those who braved the day and thanks to those who assisted with roadside entertainment here at the fisherman.

During the week ride master Graeme Barrett selected a time trial reverse from tokaanu to turangi return and exact 10 km course made trickier with the wind. Darrell and I competed against the clock and as always Graeme kept time and assured by John walker whom could not ride himself .

Saturday saw a mountin bike ride over the pylon track, a favorite and special local track not for the faint hearted with serious climbs, granny gear and some technical ascents , always a challenge to get the last few meters up the hill, one day I'll get there'd on the pedals. Then, which ever way, there is a great downhill run slowly by me by fast as you like, no cops up here and I am sure the fast guys break the round town spend limit .

Sunday ws again organized by Graeme and he a had four riders compete in the grueling 18 km time trail 3 laps of the hirangi   loop . Again the westerly southerly breeze swirled and gave little advantage all the way around the loop.   This s a points meeting with myself and margret picking up 5 points a piece, the points are close with just a few rides left.

saturday was also the half iron man and we had a team of Wim ( swim) Gena ( cycle) and Sallyanne . The day was good and they did well. Congratulations also to Jenny our local iron lady out there training for next years iron man event.

it was pleasing to here that Turangi has been selected as a site for a large sculpture noting The district as a Cycling Destination. Sites are being appraised this week.

Cycling Report

The wind was strong but the cyclist showed their mettle in teh trying conditions as did s amll group of musos who did their best to entertain, also included in Turangis entertaiment was a continual playing of "the Bicycle Song"  at the start Of turangi, thanks to Turangi Ski hire , a Huge Bicycle ,thanks toTurangi Engineering and Turangi Canvas and Upholstery and a large "Tire" Bike and rider on the side of hiway one, thanks to Raffs Tires for the hardware. Thanks To Graeme Hooker and his band, Terry Downs and Jim Gossman whilst the wind was a deterent you interest is appreciated, A classic Car display did not eventuate due to the severe weather but thanks to those who indicated their interest. Same again next year but better and well done to the huge number of riders, it is a pleasure to perform to such a dedicated crowd. THanks also to the Rock N road cycling club who played their role in assisting with lead vehicles etc and to those who rode. We punch above our weight and I am hoping that next year we can have a small division starting and finishing in Turangi as our reward.

Cycling Report

A wonderful day in wonderful company is the only way I can describe our return visit to Taumarunui cycling group.

Set up after they attended our event trainer around the “tour De Trout” course the Turangi Rock N Road group went en mass to Taumarunui’on the main trunk line’ to ride the “Ngapuke” loop in a counter clockwise direction.

A really pleasing turnout meant that the sponsored Van, from Extreme Backpackers and Climbing Wall, was full with 6 cyclist and with Wim meeting us there.

It was a good show of solidarity to our friends. There must have been 20 riders , not counting our ladies division who rode through Taumarunui to the heather farm, that set off at 10 am from Pogues Plumbing on the main street of Taumarunui.

The roads from start to finish were a cyclist’s dream, with the town roads reminiscent of a race track surface and the country roads, excepting for the odd patch, having a great surface and never more than an occasional car disturbed the social intercourse that proceeded for the following 2 hours or so.

As the ride progressed bunches formed and everyone had a new friend to chat with and then once back at Pogue’s place we were treated to a fresh cuppa and a ,straight off the grittle, cake from Steve’s Mum. Also the compulsory chocolate trout from Turangi.

It was particulary pleasing to have many moari Cyclist in the group because Moari are under represented in this sport and going on the performances we see in Turangi and Taumarunui Maori are particularly suited to the sport physically and mentally and I’d love to see more Tangata Whenua involved locally and on the national stage and it is a goal worth pursuing on a personal, local and national level.

The next ride is now in planning and we will have to lift our game if we can improve on the ride, the welcome and the food. We are up for the challenge.

Thanks To Taumarnui Cycling, Mike Pogue and Graeme ‘tinka” Bell for hosting us, to our sponsors, Pogue Plumbing and Extreme Backpackers who provided the van at a fuel only cost. Of course all those who joined in the fun well done and thanks for your support.

Photo’s depict before and after scenes.

Cycling Report

Double the fun in the king country was the order of the weekend for the rock n road cycling club.

Saturday the Taumarunui Multisport Club hosted the Dave logue Classic cycle race. The ride started in Taumarunui and went toward 8 mile junction then turned off the Ohura, this was leg one and was longer but easier than the return leg which took the riders from Ohura via the forgotten Highway back to Town, a shorter but harder ride.

There was a good turnout and wide cross section of cyclist from elite through to casual and the race started with a police escort through Tuamarunui with a neutralized race until out safely on the Highway. The ride soon broke into groups and the ride was , for me at least, fantastic and my first experience of a true race.

Once off the main road it was truly cycling bliss with great company, a good surface and interesting new scenery around every bend. My leg ended at Ohura so I only saw the pain on the faces of the riders as they climbed Tunnel hill. There were some great efforts put in and it was great to the equality of the sexes displayed explicitly with the just minutes between the overall winner Rachel Cashin female cyclist Vet (over 40) female rider Linda Tarrant. Local (Turangi) hero, Roger Bates, put in a blistering ride to secure his teams win in the vet mens division.

The rock n road entrants all picked up a division win with Wim and Roger getting first in Vet Men and myself winning the vet men first stage (by 42 mintues). We are pictured here with the overall winner (and local vet). Graeme Barret gave support in Rogers van and it was a great 10 hours of fun with the prize giving at the historic Taumaranui Club,

The organisers showed that a few people can run a great day and we look forward to joining them again and perhaps doing a joint event.

Sunday saw a group of 6 travel from Turangi to the Pureora Forest near Waimiha in the Heart of the King Country to ride a new section of the national cycle way and at the time of writing I hadn’t had feedback but I cant see anything but a fun day being had, that is the cyclist attitude, locally at least, if you are putting lots of effort into something then one makes sure one enjoys oneself. That pretty much encapsulates the philosophy of the sport I am lucky enough to have found.

The Weekend was fun and safe with no injuries , except maybe some sore legs, reported.

Cycling Report

The Rock N road cycling group meets monthly at its new home, the TT sports foundation office.

While the mundane functional that every club must deal with are processed the meetings also provide a good forum to discuss future rides and happenings, particularly during these cooler months when riding is not always an options.

This month there was a special treat with John Ninnes, pictured, A Naturopath and sports nutrition expert gave the club the benefit of his many years of study and experience at endurance events and how to assist the body to get to the finish line in good shape.

His talk was very interesting and gave some (me) a lesson in the workings of the digestive system and possible problems with certain supplements. He also shared techniques to give the body of an endurance competitor the best cache to make it through the day and provide samples of mineral additives to improve the way in which the body can absorb energy .

The meeting ran later than usual and we made it home about 10 pm but all of us were pleased to have had a chance to learn a bit more about how our bodies react to certain situations and ways to reduce the risk of not being able to complete an event due to poor nutrition.

Coming up this week is our first ride through the recently cleared Pylon track (mountain Bike), the following weekend we venture into the king country twice, Saturday several local riders planning to ride in the Mike logue memorial Taumaranui to Ohura return And on the Sunday the club is heading to Pureora to ride a new section of track in the national cycleways project.

Much talk revolved around the new ride shorts the club has, matching in well with the vests. The Club is progressing well in a time when many are struggling. The beauty of cycling is the health benefits and the low running cost of partaking in the sport. Once a Bike is purchased excepting for occasional tyres they run virtually for free. A motorcycle may cost as much as $30 per week just to sit there and more when you use it so in the current financial environment cycling is a good option to keep the books balanced at home and great for families to enjoy leaving the wallet at home.

We look forward to improving weather and many more good local rides, with occasional trips away as well. Remember to be seen and safe on the roads.

Cycle Event Training Ride

Cycle event training ride

Ideas.

The aim is to provide a ride that enables all riders the opportunity to participate and also to offer riders the chance to practice a distance they are training toward for a future event.

I drove the proposed course and suggest the follwing transition points.

Teams rides (approximate distances)

Tokaanu to summit of the Waituhi saddle , 37 km Climbing Hard

Waituhi saddle to Mahoe Motels, 25 km easy to moderate (mainly downhill)

Mahoe Motel to summit of Raurimu hill , 32km climbing hard

Raurimu hill to Whakapapaiti stream , 15 km mainly flat easy

Whakapapa iti stream to Tokaanu 40 km moderate to hard.

Teams of 3,4 or 5 can ride this course. The aim is to have every club member ride, it is a training event so participation should be a priority over finishing results.

Teams of 2 can change over at the owhango hotel.

Individuals can arrange with teams for supplies to be carried.

Each team to organize a vehicle (s) .

Alternatively break for lunch at owhango and restart from there after everyone has had lunch ?

Riders briefing 8 am Start at 8.30 am team transport to proceed to transition points ahead of riders.

Timing will be up to each team if desired and for safety a ‘tail end Charly’ motorcycle with (cycle event following ) sign .

After event a BBQ evening .

Your thoughts to me. In person or aalarms@xtra.co.nz

Cycling Report

The Rock n road cycling club received their shipment of new, emblazoned, cycling shorts last week. Christina was the driving force behind this project with funds gratefully received from local pub charity. There was still a small amount to pay for the shorts but they are a real bargain, top quality and have the clubs logo printed on them. If you haven’t picked up your shorts get in quick.

The shorts match the vest made last year and the aim is to get the club recognized when its members are involved in events around the country. Also in preparation for the coming season there is to be a ‘training event’ ride on the 8
th of October.

This ride will take riders the full loop to Mananui, National park and back to Tokaanu. A ride that is comparable in length and difficulty to many one day events around the country. The riders will determine the distance they will ride depending on what they are training for.

There has been much interest from Taumaranui riders who are training for their event later in October and the lake Taupo cycle challenge. It is expected to have several teams and at lest a few individuals. The legs are set up in such a way that anyone could ride at least one of the legs so we are hoping to get a good turnout of our local cyclist.

The pre ride briefing is to be held at the Tokaanu Water sports centre and riders will meet their after completing the ride.

Also on the calendar have been rides at Craters of the moon, and a trip from Tree trunk gorge to town, which was really enjoyable despite the rain. Next month there is a ride planned to Pureora forest to ride a new track that has opened recently.

At our last meeting we received tales from France from our 2 riders who followed Le Tour this year. We look forward to the photos and more stories soon.

Cycling Report

While the cold snap continues daytime temperatures are on the rise and this has enabled the keen and the well rugged up members of the Rock N Road cycling club to continue with their ride calendar with only the odd cancellation.

The King/Queen of the hill competition has continues with a double hill climb (Te ponga Saddle and Waihi Hill) and a ride to the top of the Puketarata return on Road bikes, Ian Showing good form for the coming summer rides. Last Saturday there was a mountain bike ride from Motuoapa to the Kainmanawa Forest Park. This was an 18 km climb , a short rest, then and 18 km downhill run.

With A couple of riders missing the start time and catching up to the other 5 riders at the summit Graeme decided that the points would be awarded on to the finishers of the down hill run. The top of the road is of a steeper gradient and this favoured the bolder down hill riders. Graeme Barret showed that age is no barrier to going fast downhill. The last 10 k was a flatter run and Arthurs legs proved to strong making a break on the field and finishing first. John also picking up points. The Turnout of 7 riders was very heartening and those who made the effort enjoyed a magic afternoon.

Evening rides continue, with lights, around local tracks from 6 at the usual meeting place and the ride calendar is available at
www.turangicycling.org.

The club is looking forward to arrival home fo the riders who followed the Tour de France this year. It was an exciting race this year, with an Australian rider winning for the first time. The photos and tales of those there at the time will be greatly enjoyed I am sure.

Cycling Report

The wild winter weather and short day light hours has not dampened the enthusiasm of the dedicated cyclists of Turangi’s Rock n Road cycling club. Even if some of the activities are indoors.

To maintain club spirit there was a “mid winter’ gathering which this year was held at ‘the lakehouse’ at Waihi. A total of 22 took advantage of the evening which also served and a “Bon Voyage” for members who were heading away to France to follow the most important cycle event of the year the “Tour de France” . Turangi has at least 4 people following the race in person with some riding to be done in the most scenic parts of France. The evening was a great success and I am sure it will be repeated next Winter.

With Gratitude to the huckleberries Charitable Trust the Club is having Cycling Shorts ,or ‘knicks’ as they seem to be called these days, emblazoned with the Clubs Logo and name. These will be a great addition to the vests which were produced last year. Not only will these add to club spirit locally but will also make members stand out in the crowd at events promoting our town for recreational cycling.

The Wednesday rides continue as night rides around local mountain bike tracks and have continued to have good turnouts when the weather allows. Weekend rides have also been interrupted by severe weather but some local mountain bike rides have been undertaken with great leadership form Darrel Couchman (president), John Walker (club captain) and Graeme Barret (ride manager) ensuring the rides go ahead. Also when rides could not take place there ahs been some clearing of tracks so we can look forward to some great riding this summer, thanks to those who brought their scrub cutters and leant a hand.

The Web site, Turangicycling.org, is proving to be a great tool for the members with the ride calendar and other information regularly updated by Christina , the clubs tech support centre, and her efforts are also greatly appreciated.

As the days lengthen we look forward to the time when we can resume evening training rides and the forthcoming events of the new season but for the mean time the club will continue its local rides so check the calendar and come and join in.
