Cycling Report

While the cold snap continues daytime temperatures are on the rise and this has enabled the keen and the well rugged up members of the Rock N Road cycling club to continue with their ride calendar with only the odd cancellation.

The King/Queen of the hill competition has continues with a double hill climb (Te ponga Saddle and Waihi Hill) and a ride to the top of the Puketarata return on Road bikes, Ian Showing good form for the coming summer rides. Last Saturday there was a mountain bike ride from Motuoapa to the Kainmanawa Forest Park. This was an 18 km climb , a short rest, then and 18 km downhill run.

With A couple of riders missing the start time and catching up to the other 5 riders at the summit Graeme decided that the points would be awarded on to the finishers of the down hill run. The top of the road is of a steeper gradient and this favoured the bolder down hill riders. Graeme Barret showed that age is no barrier to going fast downhill. The last 10 k was a flatter run and Arthurs legs proved to strong making a break on the field and finishing first. John also picking up points. The Turnout of 7 riders was very heartening and those who made the effort enjoyed a magic afternoon.

Evening rides continue, with lights, around local tracks from 6 at the usual meeting place and the ride calendar is available at
www.turangicycling.org.

The club is looking forward to arrival home fo the riders who followed the Tour de France this year. It was an exciting race this year, with an Australian rider winning for the first time. The photos and tales of those there at the time will be greatly enjoyed I am sure.

Safe Cycling
