Cycling Report
If you live near the Tongariro River you could be forgiven for thinking there have been visitation from outer-space when you saw the lines of bright coloured lights zig-zaging in the darkness on Wednesday evenings. The rational explanation is not little men in flying saucers but the Turangi Rock N Road cycling clubs Night ride series.
The Winter series of Mountain bike rides is proving to be very popular with many new faces joining in with the regular Turangi cyclists to ride some of our local tracks from a new perspective. Everything changes in the dark and what seemed easy and predictable in daylight becomes tricky and interesting when you are relying on battery power lights to see.
Over the past few weeks numbers have grown with 13 riders joining in. Almost as numerous were the types of lights from the latest and greatest LED’s to the Home Made specials. There are plenty of points for the riders to regroup along the way and it is a good way to keep the legs fit through the shorter days when getting out on the road after work is not so easy or safe. The rides leave from the old information Centre at 6 pm on Wednesdays.
The wet weather has put a damper on weekend numbers but there have still been the hardy group who have turned up for the rides including outings to the Kinloch Track and a guided ride , By Wim, of the Kuratau beach tracks. Darrel, our Club Captain, is showing great leadership turning out for most rides regardless of conditions with good humour and gybes.
The clubs Ride Calender is posted at Turangicycling.org.nz and the club has a wide range of rides with the emphasis on getting out there but also offering incentives to those who wish to compete in events. Under discussion now is the mid winter get together which was a huge success last year. Members will be kept posted on the date and location.
