Cycling Report

The last few weeks have been busy and filled with rides despite the winter weather making its presence felt. The Rock N Road cycling Club has been very active locally, Some rode the T42 event which was a race over the 42 traverse from the Tongariro Forest to Owhango. This is a very testing track to ride with fast technical downhills and long grinding climbs usually it is an all day ride but the top riders cover the distance in around 2 Hours.

The Club has been carrying out some maintenance and clearing on some local tracks and the Wednesday rides are now Night rides over local Tracks including the new section of Track front the Tongariro bridge to The major Jones bridge. Once this track has settled in it will be a great addition to the existing range of local tracks. Our Monthly Meetings are held at the new home of Turangi Sports, the Sports Foundation Building.

The Road, Mountainbike and hillclimb points series continue with good turnouts. The new Points systems ensures a tight finish is likely in all events so attendance is a must for a good result. The Saddle hill Climb again attracted 10 riders, traditionally the easiest ride to “give a miss” due to the difficulty of the climb. The new finish point at the Summit adds a sprint finish and Matt Truebridge’s 23 minutes was the best time recorded and would be a good time even to the old finish some 800 metres back down the hill.
The turnout was very pleasing to the Club Committee as have been turnouts to many rides this year. Well done riders!

Last weekend was a circuit of Lake Rotoaire and the puketarata Hill Climb which also attracted 2 visiting cyclist from the Hawkes bay “Ramblers Club” (Ian and Terry). They pushed the pace along showing a clean set of Heels over the Saddle to Eivins corner. It was pleasing to have guests as well as Ian Coles who joined us for the ride and showed good form.

Future rides are listed at Turangicycling.org.nz we welcome all riders of all levels and will customize rides to suit their abilities.
